Perplexity alternatives for research
Pick by what you used Perplexity for. For cited web answers, try Scira AI (open source, AGPL-3.0), Gemini or ChatGPT search. For ad-free private search, Kagi starts at $5 a month. For academic papers, Consensus, Elicit, Semantic Scholar and Google Scholar search paper indexes. Developers can use You.com's free search API tier.
Start from the job, not the brand
Perplexity bundles web search, file collections and long research runs. No single tool replaces all of it. The table groups alternatives by the job you need done, with the failure mode our dossier records for each. It is not a ranking: we have not tested citation reliability across these tools.
For academic papers, tools built on paper indexes are a different category from web AI search. Undermind and Ai2 Asta also do paper search; we have no public dossier for either yet.
| Job and tool | Price / licence | Watch out for (from our dossier) |
|---|---|---|
| Cited web answers, open source: Scira AIDossierSource 1 | Code published under the AGPL-3.0 licence. Hosted plan limits: see dossier. | Social and fast-moving modes can overweight recency/chatter |
| Cited web answers: Gemini with Search groundingDossierSource 1 | Free: “$0 / month with a Google Account”; paid Google AI plans. See dossier. | Search grounding can cite SEO/support/forum/stale pages |
| Cited web answers: ChatGPT searchDossierSource 1 | “The free version of ChatGPT is available to everyone.” Search by plan: see dossier. | Breadth can hide weak methodology |
| Cited web answers: Microsoft CopilotDossier | See dossier. | Copilot products have different data boundaries |
| Private, ad-free search: KagiDossierSource 1 | Trial: 100 searches. Starter $5/mo (300 searches), Professional $10/mo (unlimited search), Ultimate $25/mo (Assistant Research mode). Sales tax extra on some plans. | A paid search engine first; the AI Assistant is an add-on with fair-use limits. |
| Academic papers: Consensus, Elicit, Semantic Scholar, Google ScholarDossier | See each dossier. | Searching a paper index cuts invented titles, not unsupported claims. Read the cited passage. |
| For developers: You.com Web Search APIDossierSource 1 | Free API tier of “up to 100 queries a day” via MCP, with “No API key, no account, no credit card”; paid from $5 per 1,000 calls. This is the API, not consumer chat. | Consumer/API surfaces can shift quickly |
What you lose by switching
Perplexity keeps web search, uploaded files and Deep Research in one place. Splitting that across two tools costs some convenience. Switching does not fix citation errors either: every AI search tool still needs you to open the source.
Questions this guide answers
Every answer below is assembled from the dated fields on this page. Nothing is written separately for search.
What is the best free Perplexity alternative?
There is no single best one, and we have not ranked them. For cited web answers, Gemini and ChatGPT both have free versions; check each dossier for what search includes. For papers, Semantic Scholar and Google Scholar are free to search.
Is there an open-source Perplexity alternative?
Yes: Scira AI publishes its code on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 licence. Its hosted version has its own limits; check the dossier.
What is a Perplexity alternative for academic research?
Tools that search a paper index: Consensus, Elicit, Semantic Scholar or Google Scholar. They still need checking: a real paper can be cited for a claim it doesn't make.
Is Kagi better than Perplexity?
They do different jobs. Kagi is a paid, ad-free search engine with an AI Assistant on top; Perplexity is an AI answer engine. See our Kagi vs Perplexity compare.
Does Perplexity make up sources?
It can cite wrongly. Our guide on the question sets out the two published tests and their limits, plus a quick check.
