University of Vienna: AI Rules for Theses
At the University of Vienna, the rules depend on your subject, and for a thesis you clarify with your supervisor how to document AI use. The central declaration form BSP/W1 requires you to make all texts and images generated with AI tools transparent, including how you changed them while writing. Your supervisor decides the format.
What the official text says
These are the university's own words, quoted as published. Where the original is French, the third column paraphrases it; it is not a translation.
| Source | Official wording (verbatim) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
You declare AI-generated text and images, and how you changed them. |
| For a thesis, agree the documentation with your supervisor. |
What you have to do
Ask your supervisor before you start writing and keep a short log of every AI use (tool, date, task, what you kept). The declaration is much easier to fill in from a log than from memory.
Sign the BSP/W1 form and document AI-generated texts and images in the way you agreed with your supervisor.
What the rule leaves open
Subject-specific rules were not checked. The University of Vienna is in Austria; Swiss rules don't apply there.
