University of Geneva: AI Rules by Faculty

It depends on your faculty. The University of Geneva's Rectorat leaves the rules on AI in teaching and assessment to faculties and interfaculty centres, so there is no single UNIGE thesis rule. Students are personally responsible for their use of generative AI and bound by scientific integrity. The faculty directives we found all require a declaration.

What the official text says

These are the university's own words, quoted as published. Where the original is French, the third column paraphrases it; it is not a translation.

UNIGE FTI: directive 2024-10 (translation and interpreting faculty only)Source 1Ces lignes directrices s’appliquent aux mémoires, pour lesquels les étudiant·es doivent respecter les principes de l’Université et signer la Déclaration attestant le caractère original et authentique du travail (voir section E).Paraphrase (FTI only): for a mémoire you sign a declaration that the work is original and authentic.

What you have to do

Ask your supervisor before you start writing and keep a short log of every AI use (tool, date, task, what you kept). The declaration is much easier to fill in from a log than from memory.

Find your faculty's directive. Sciences has a directive with declaration templates; GSEM sets thesis rules per programme; FTI has its own directive and declaration. None of these applies outside its own faculty.

What the rule leaves open

The central “Guide IA pour l'enseignement” is written for teachers. It sets no thesis rule and offers no declaration template, though it tells students to say when they used AI. Faculties other than GSEM, Sciences and FTI were not checked.

Questions this guide answers

Every answer below is assembled from the dated fields on this page. Nothing is written separately for search.

Can I use AI in my UNIGE thesis?

It depends on your faculty and your teachers. Ask before you start.

Is there a university-wide declaration form?

No. The central teaching guide has no template. Faculties such as Sciences and FTI provide their own.
