Fribourg Law Faculty: AI Rules for Papers
At the University of Fribourg's Faculty of Law, AI is not banned but must be transparent. For written work started from 16 February 2026, you must record AI use for writing in a register annexed to the paper, add the chat log if AI contributed considerably, and footnote any AI output you can't avoid reproducing. Pure search use is exempt.
What the official text says
These are the university's own words, quoted as published. Where the original is French, the third column paraphrases it; it is not a translation.
| Source | Official wording (verbatim) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Paraphrase: the rules don't ban AI; they require transparency about it. |
| Paraphrase: log every AI use for writing in a register annexed to the electronic version; Directive n° 3 has an example. |
What you have to do
Ask your supervisor before you start writing and keep a short log of every AI use (tool, date, task, what you kept). The declaration is much easier to fill in from a log than from memory.
Directive n° 3 in short (paraphrase of ch. 59c–59e): keep a register of every AI use for writing (59c); use purely as a search engine does not go in it. If AI contributed considerably to the content, for example structuring, developing or checking arguments, annex the chat log (59d), and avoid reproducing AI output; if you do, cite it in a footnote with the prompt, the tool and the date (59e).
What the rule leaves open
This covers the Faculty of Law only, not the University of Fribourg as a whole. Work started before 16.02.2026 stays under the older directive. We did not transcribe the annex with the example register and the adapted declaration of autonomy.
